Weapons and Armor: Reading an Armament as an Object
Reading the Data
An armament in a museum is not just a tool of violence; it is a crafted object, a mark of status, and a record of a technique. This guide is about reading weapons and armor that way.
**Craft over function.** A ceremonial sword is made to be seen as much as to be used; the finish and the form are the point.
**Status and identity.** Armor and weapons name rank and role. The form of the piece often tells you who wore or carried it, not just what it did.
**Material and making.** Steel, bronze, lacquer and leather: the material and the making technique are part of the object's meaning. How it was made is a record.
**From tool to trophy.** Many pieces passed from use to display; the collection's armament holds both the working object and the ceremonial one. Read them separately.
