About
MuseumAtlas publishes the Metropolitan Museum of Art Open Access collection: artworks the Met has determined to be in the public domain, accompanied by free-to-use images and complete metadata.
The Met's Open Access policy makes public-domain artworks and their images freely available to anyone, for any purpose. The collection metadata is released under CC0 (no rights reserved), meaning you can use, copy, modify and distribute it freely.
How we build the site: we import the Met's published bulk metadata (MetObjects.csv), enrich it with image URLs from the Met Collection API, and compute derived rankings ourselves — largest works, earliest objects, top artists and more. Rankings are plain calculations over the raw metadata, not editorial opinions.
What the data includes: each artwork record carries the Met's title, artist, date, medium, dimensions, classification, department, geography and credit line, plus the object ID and Wikidata link. We link every artwork back to its source page on metmuseum.org.
What the data does not include: the Met does not provide usage statistics or popularity counts. 'Highlights' are the Met's own designations. We do not host images ourselves — we link to the Met's CDN, which serves both full-resolution originals and web-large previews.
